Listeria is still around!

In every one of my classes, I mention Listeria. Listeriosis is a very serious illness that can cause 3rd trimester miscarriage of the human fetus. It is the reason that doctors tell women who are pregnant to avoid soft cheeses and deli meat, as it is commonly spread throughout deli cases and refrigeration units. Unlike most bacteria, Listeria can thrive in a cool, moist environment at temperatures below 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Although it is less common these days with better storage practices, it was the culprit in the costly Blue Bell Ice Cream outbreak of 2015. Now, there is another apparent outbreak: https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/nutrition/2-dead-multiple-sick-in-listeria-outbreak-affecting-11-states-cdc/ar-BB1hTwGb?cvid=45026a89669643b29b2818e29fc2b07b&ocid=winp2fptaskbarhover&ei=14&sc=shoreline

Even though we rarely hear about Listeriosis, it’s still important to be aware and keep this one on your radar!
